The New York American (New York, NY, USA)

Founded in 1882 by Joseph Pulitzer, The New York Morning Journal was acquired in 1896 by newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, who relaunched it as The New York American, a daily priced at three cents. By 1924, the circulation of its ten-cent Sunday edition exceeded one million, the largest of any paper in the city. As the mouthpiece for Hearst's reactionary political views, The New York American was a fierce rival of Pulitzer's own progressive New York World during the first decade of the twentieth century.
