The New York Herald (New York, NY, USA)

15 April 1912

Founded by James Gordon Bennett, Sr. in 1835, The New York Herald quickly established itself as the most commercially successful paper in the United States. Under the direction of Bennett's flamboyant son, James Gordon Bennett, Jr., it sponsored Henry Morton Stanley's African expeditions of 1871 and 1874-77. A European edition was launched in 1887. In 1924, The Herald was acquired by its rival, The New York Tribune, forming The New York Herald Tribune, which was eventually to evolve into The International Herald Tribune.
