Periodical The Speaker (London, UK)
23 April 1904
The Speaker: A Review of Politics, Letters, Science, and the Arts ran from 4 January 4 1890
to 30 September 1899 and, in a new series, as
The Speaker: The Liberal Review from 7 October 1899 to 23 February 1907. Under the editorship of
J. L. Hammond (1899-1906), it
served as a prominent forum for Liberal politics, voicing support for Free Trade and opposition to the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), during which it published articles critical of the war by
J. A. Hobson. By 1904 the paper was struggling, and it folded in 1907.
