The Chicago Examiner (Chicago, IL, USA)
4 July 1900
The
Chicago Examiner, a William Randolph Hearst publication, began in 1902 as a morning edition to complement the evening edition paper, the
Chicago American. Introduced at the cost of one penny, the
Examiner set off a circulation war with the
Chicago Tribune. The
Examiner merged with the
Chicago Herald, which Hearst bought in 1918.
