Published in Hoboken, New Jersey, between February 1942 and at least May 1947, Encore was a high-quality 25' literary reprint magazine that advertised itself as 'a continuing anthology' for 'connoisseurs of life and letters' with 'nothing condensed or synopsized'. Mostly non-fiction and poetry, its contents also included short stories and extracts from novels by Isak Dinesen, Sherwood Anderson, Stephen Crane, Bret Harte, O. Henry, James Joyce, Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, Guy de Maupassant, Anton Chekov, Frank Norris, J.B Priestley, Walt Whitman, Leo Tolstoy, Mark Twain, and Emile Zola. It was edited by Dent Smith (1942-1944) and Norman Cousins (1945-1947).
