The Famous Story Magazine (London, UK)


Apparently a British edition of The Famous Story Magazine (USA) that appeared four months earlier, this shilling monthly reprint magazine was issued by Atlas Publishing & Distributing Ltd from February 1926 until at least May 1927. It was edited by Dell Publishing founder George T. Delacorte, Jr., and David Arnold Balch (Feb-Aug 1926), thereafter Delacorte, Jr. The Famous Magazine Story (UK) reprinted poetry and prose by canonical writers -- among them Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Charles Lamb, Lord Tennyson, Lord Byron, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Oscar Wilde, and Robert Louis Stevenson -- as well as articles and magazine stories by contemporary writers from the previous decade: Arnold Bennett, Jack London, Pierre Loti, W.W. Jacobs, Sinclair Lewis, Irving Bacheller, Perceval Gibbon, Booth Tarkington, Edna Ferber, Achmed Abdullah, Gertrude Atherton, and Edmond Rostand. In 1926, it serialized F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (1925) between August and December, and published a letter from Jack London to Conrad in September.
