The Dial (New York, NY, USA)

Founded as a transcendentalist magazine in 1840, The Dial underwent a series of transformations before emerging as a pre-eminent publisher of Modernist artwork and writing under the editorship of Scofield Thayer (1920-1927) and Marianne Moore (1927-1929). It was in The Dial that T.S. Eliot's 'The Waste Land' was first published in the United States, and Eliot was also among the earliest recipients of its annual award for 'service to letters'. Published in New York, the magazine boasted a dazzling contributor list that included: Sherwood Anderson, Djuna Barnes, Hart Crane, e.e. cummings, Thomas Mann, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Kahlil Gibran, Gaston Lachaise, Amy Lowell, Ezra Pound, Bertrand Russell, Carl Sandburg, and W.B. Yeats. The Dial ceased publication in 1929.
